What would you do if you won the lottery?

Buy a house. Not some kind of mansion, probably a 2 or 3 bed house with a decent garden so that when we get a dog we'll have space for it to run around. I'd want to donate to trans people's surgery fundraisers, and I'd probably give my parents some money so that they'll have a degree of financial security as they age because they have not been sensible with money so far. My best friend has a dream to live on a boat, so I'd want to help her with that if she would let me. I'd keep a fair amount aside because I'm young and disabled and I'd like to be able to have financial security without needing to work full time.

Maybe I was supposed to take this a bit less seriously.

What era do you wish you had lived in?

To be honest, although right now is a hellscape, I'm not really convinced that any other era would have been better overall. I don't really want to trade the climate crisis for dysentery, or Brexit chaos for not being able/permitted to work. I like the idea of living in Tudor England, but only because that time period is one of my slightly obsessive interests.

I really do take these questions too seriously, don't I?

What kind of robot would you want?

One that would do the housework, no question. Executive dysfunction + chronic fatigue + laziness means that my housework is never done to a great standard, if it is done at all. I'd love to live in a clean house.

What would you outsource if you could?

Housework, as above. I can't get it done, and I really want it to be done.

What superpower do you wish you had?

Superspeed, because I'm often late to things!

What is your favorite place?

Wherever my favourite people are, I think. There used to be a place by the river near my parents' house that was hidden from view by trees, which was my favourite place to be for a long time. Unfortunately the council cut them down and now it just makes me sad.

What is your favorite place in your home?

Bed? Sofa? Honestly, if it's squishy and I could sleep on it, I'm good. Probably the sofa. It's the first big piece of furniture that my boyfriend and I bought for the house, and it's also really squishy and comfortable. I feel like I'm probably supposed to give a more meaningful answer, but there it is!

Would you most want to live in a city, a suburb or the country?

I think I've posted before that I'd prefer to live in the country, because quiet and nature and beautiful landscapes, but that living in the city would be better for me, because it makes finding people I have things in common with much easier. I definitely very much don't want to live in a suburb.

What is special about the town you live in?

Umm...it's old? To be honest there isn't much that's special to me, I haven't been here very long and don't intend to be here much longer.

How much time do you spend in nature?

Not enough. I wish I spent more time in nature, I know that I feel better about myself and the world when I do. But my motivation isn't great and it's easier to just...not.

What was your favorite childhood vacation?

Probably a Christmas holiday in Thailand. I loved every moment of it and we got to meet a young elephant, which was pretty special.

What is your dream vacation?

I want to go to Iceland in winter and look for the Northern Lights. Obviously there are other things to do in Iceland, but that's the thing that really sticks out to me.

If you could take a trip around the world, what locations would you be sure to include?

I'd want to go to Paphos, because I've really enjoyed holidays there. I'd like to see more of Cyprus generally, including North Cyprus which I've never been to. I'd want to go back to Hong Kong. I'd want to go to Hokkaido again. I think basically my ideal trip around the world just involves going back to places I've already been! I'd love to go to the Hobbiton set in New Zealand though, that would be new. Also probably more of New Zealand, it looks beautiful.

Do you prefer vacations to new destinations, to familiar destinations, or a mix?

My last answer might have given this away a bit! I like things that are familiar. I can get overwhelmingly anxious about new experiences, which really detracts from any eventual enjoyment.

What activities would you plan for a two week staycation?

...people plan activities when they get to spend two weeks at home? Absolutely not. I might go to the Lake District, but that's closeish to where I'm living and in all probability I would think about going to the Lakes, tell myself I'd do it tomorrow, and then do the same thing for the whole two weeks. Frankly, I like my bed, I like my sofa, I love my books, I love my games. Nature is beautiful, but fibro is a painful thing and honestly I'm going to need two weeks of doing very little to recover from what I'm doing at the moment work-wise. Why would I pass up the opportunity to get some actual rest?

OK it's technically Saturday now, but it's still Friday in some of the world!

Is there a particular historical period or event, anywhere in the world, that fascinates you?

I periodically get really interested in Tudor history. It comes in cycles, so bascially I'm obsessive about it for a few months, lose interest for long enough to forget most of what I learned, then learn all the same stuff again a year or two later. Rinse, repeat.

Would you like to visit that time, or live in it permanently, or does the whole idea make you want to run screaming?

Definitely not!

What's the best piece of historical writing, nonfiction or fiction, you've ever read?

Katherine by Anya Seton. It's not my usual period, but it's a fantastic book. I read it when I was about 15 and borrowed it from the school library; I borrowed it several times over the next few years, and my own copy now has the look of a paperback that's been well loved.

What's the worst?

I read a truly appalling 'nonfiction' book about King Arthur once. It desperately wanted attention from an editor for one thing; for another it made baseless claim after baseless claim without giving any reason for these beyond 'and I think...'.

Is there a historical site you would love to visit?

Honestly there are loads. I'd love to see Stonehenge at the winter solstice. I'd love to see more Greek historical sites. I'd love to go back to Pompeii as an adult (I hugely underappreciated it when I went as a teenager). I want to go to Star Carr, I want to go back to the Uffington Horse, I want to see the Cerne Abbas giant and the Long Man of Wilmington (not sure how historical these two actually are but they're from the past at least). There's so much to see without even leaving the country, I'd never stop if I started listing all the things I want to see in the rest of the world!
