Johnson's team have apparently said that they will prorogue Parliament for a second time when this prorogation comes to an end. Johnson has said that he will not comply with the law passed by Parliament requiring him to ask for an extension to the Brexit deadline if no deal has been agreed by (I think) 19th October. He has been reported as issuing 'warnings' to the judges of the Supreme Court, which is well beyond the role of a Prime Minister.

I'm frightened. This is not what democracy looks like. This man, who is acting for all the world like a dictator, has not been elected. This is not democracy.

How does a civil war begin? The English Civil War sprang out of the actions of Charles I, who believed strongly in the divine right of kings and did not accept that Parliament had any authority over him.

Johnson is not a king, but he clearly does not accept the sovereignty of Parliament. Hilariously, in the Brexit referendum campaign he and his ilk told the country that the EU would rob Parliament of its sovereignty. Now the call is coming from inside the house.

UK politics is exciting at the moment. First there was Phillip Lee, who crossed the floor and joined the Lib Dems during one of Boris Johnson's speeches leaving our extremist, populist government with no majority.

Then there was the vote yesterday for MPs to take control of the parliamentary agenda today, so that they could debate a bill to prevent no-deal Brexit. Crucially, 21 Tory MPs voted against the government, knowing that doing so would likely lead to their expulsion from the Conservative party. These MPs have indeed been expelled from their party, including Rory Stewart, who was deselected by text shortly before accepting a Politician of the Year award which...peak Brexit tbh.

Today the bill designed to block no-deal Brexit was passed by the House of Commons. Obviously, the UK political process being a hot convoluted mess, this doesn't mean that the bill will necessarily actually pass, but still. It's nice to have something to feel hopeful about. It's nice to think that our 'democracy' is still able to accomplish things.

So, for anyone lucky enough to have missed the news, UK democracy is meaningless. Our Prime Minister/Trump wannabe will be suspending Parliament in the runup to the Brexit deadline, presumably because he knows that Parliament would not allow a no-deal Brexit.

There's a petition that any British citizen or UK resident can sign protesting this move, and I'd encourage everyone who can to do so, but it feels pretty hollow. The world is incredibly frightening at the moment.

The last few days in the UK have been...fun. I actually feel more optimistic about the country than I was expecting to. Granted that's still pretty pessimistic, but the explicitly Remain parties had a greater share of the vote than the explicitly Brexit parties. Also the Tories had their worst election result going back to 1832 and if that isn't a reason to feel cheerful I don't know what is.

Corbyn finally seems to realise that people aren't going to vote Labour without knowing what their position is and seems to be starting to give way to the people calling for a second referendum. Given the EU election results that might mean we can just about stop this self-inflicted catastrophe from happening. I can hope so anyway.
