To fic, or not to fic?

I've started writing fanfic again. It'll probably be only one or two fics and then I'll stop again, but at least it will be something. I've stopped reading fic at all recently and I'm not sure why, but hopefully writing will help me get back into reading. I've never written HP next gen before and I'm not sure how it will go, but I'm enjoying starting it.

I don't know how I feel about writing HP fanfic either. A big part of me wants to distance myself from anything and everything related to JKR, but Harry Potter has been so important to me for so long that I really don't know how I'd go about that. Maybe I'll start putting old style disclaimers at the top of fics, only instead of saying that I don't own the world/characters I'll just talk about how shit she is.

My two cents? If you're inspired to write you should write. I know it's very hard to separate the work and the author, but if HP has meant a lot to you in the past, I don't think JKR should be allowed to take that away. A disclaimer isn't a bad idea, and also, fic is an opportunity to change or fix things you don't like about canon.

I agree with this. JKR is 100% a terrible, awful, no good person. HOWEVER: The fandom gave us the things we really love about the series. It's fandom that made sorting quizzes and fic that filled in gaps and explained plot holes. It's the community that makes HP magical.

Someone more clever than me said "JKR might have given us the series, but fandom gave us My Immortal".

That is a fantastic way to sum up the whole thing, I love it.

I don't know why I'm finding it harder now than I was a few months ago. Maybe because she's said more awful things, I don't know. I agree with you about the fandom though. I suppose that is the best way to keep things in perspective.

It's been more difficult for me lately as well. I think I'm longing for the safety and simplicity of the time I had with HP less than HP itself, if that makes sense.

Thanks <3 I really want to finish the fic I've started because it's been months since I've had any real inspiration for writing. I think I'll probably go with the disclaimer idea. I don't know why but I feel kind of nostalgic for fanfic disclaimers.

Same, actually! I used to put them on all my stuff, and goodness knows why, no-one would ever think I own Middle-earth 😂 but this is a great use for them.

Do you think you'll post a link to the fic on here? I'd love to read it when you're done.

I expect so, just need to make sure I actually finish it! I have so many partially written fics, it's silly.

I feel like decrying JKR's shitty opinions is a fine new fannish tradition. There are no wrong decisions when it comes to deciding whether to leave or stay in a fandom, but whenever I see a pithy disclaimer before an HP fic, it's kind of heartwarming, you know?

It's wonderful to see the fandom collectively be done with her. I imagine it would be, yeah. I haven't been reading any for a while, so haven't come across one, but I'm glad to know they're there.
